NZIF – A Century of Professional Forestry Practice - 1927-2027

As a contribution to the New Zealand Institute of Forestry centenary celebration a history giving an account of some of the events and people that have been influential is being prepared.  The Institute is the only forestry organisation in New Zealand to have endured for that period, continually supporting and serving its members, contributing significantly to forestry practice and policy and providing guidance on the benefits of forestry in the New Zealand landscape.

The book is being produced by Peter Berg and Emeritus Professor Michael Roche and will include a number of contributions from some of the more recent Institute officers and leaders over the past few decades.  Completing the book is on a tight deadline but hopefully all members will have the opportunity of obtaining a copy at next year’s ANZIF Conference.

The book addresses some of the issues around establishing the Institute, especially on membership qualifications and qualities while the challenges of competing land use, the domination of foresters from the State Forest Service, managing native forests and registration or recognition of Foresters providing consulting and advisory services are discussed.    Where possible the particular personalities involved and the role of individual foresters in shaping the organisation to become the Institute we are now familiar with are highlighted, many photographs are included while the style used verges on the anecdotal to make it easy reading.
